2009 wrap up
So today is the last day of 2009, congratulations for making it through another year of cinematic ups and downs. I have decided not to make a top 10 list but rather a list of movies I enjoyed or hated. I have categorized them appropriately as the number one film in categories that I have made up. Granted, I haven’t had the opportunity to watch some of the movies that are award worthy so please bare with me if I have left them off. Check out the fun list after the jump Read more »

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Review (South Korea)–a MUST SEE Movie!

| by Alex DiGiovanna | Movie Reviews, Trailers | Comments

They say there is a first time for everything, well my reaction after Park Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot – 2002) was definitely a first for me. Last night, I sat stunned for five minutes trying to decide who to actually sympathize with, no pun intended. The story, acting, and directing made it almost impossible for me to decipher who the actual protagonist was and who the antagonist was, leaving my ability to empathize equally split amongst the characters in the story. The Edukators Review (Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei) [Germany]

| by Alex DiGiovanna | Movie Reviews | Comments

Yesterday I took a risk. I walked into my local library browsed through the foreign DVD section and picked a random movie based off its cover. Normally I don’t judge most things by its cover, but then I saw the title of the movie and it got me intrigued. So I picked it up and read the synopsis on the back and thought to myself, ok this seems like it’s going to be a solid flick. The movie is entitled The Edukators (Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei), and it’s a German film from 2004 that has won a few German film awards delivered by a pretty solid cast. The movie is a tad deceptive from the synopsis you get on the back of the DVD cover. To find out why Read more »

Christopher Nolan’s Inception Trailer #2

| by Alex DiGiovanna | News, Trailers | Comments

On July 16, 2010, the movie Inception will be released. It is the highly anticipated follow-up from director by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight). The trailer, embedded below, gives us a much more in-depth look at the trippy mind adventure that we, the audience, are going to experience on that midsummer night. The trailer looks much cooler and far-out than what I was initially expecting judging from the secretive teaser trailer. Check out the trailer after the jump. Read more »

Avatar Movie Review: A Visual Masterpiece

| by Alex DiGiovanna | Movie Reviews | Comments

Very few movies leave me speechless when I walk out of a theatre, but Avatar brought that feeling of disbelief to a whole new level after my IMAX 3D experience. Opening day, 3:45 pm at Jordan’s IMAX Theatre with basses built into the seat to kick your ass while you watch the movie’s thunderous scenes, I sat completely immersed in the world of Pandora for an unknowing 2 ½ hours. Would I say money well spent? Definitely! To give you a quick summary of my review: the story was simple with many underlying meanings about the human race and current state of the world, the animation of the entire world of Pandora was visually orgasmic, and lastly the casting choice, for the most part, was spot on and could barely be improved.
