‘The Purge’ Trailer Shows What Happens When All Crime is Legal for 12 Hours
Imagine, if you will, if there was one day out of the year where all crime was legal for 12 hours. You could do whatever you want to whoever you wanted without getting into any trouble. As a result, crime would be at an all-time low for the rest of the year but that one night, no one would be safe.
That’s the awesome premise behind the upcoming Sci-Fi/thriller film The Purge from writer/director James DeMonaco. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey in the parental roles of a wealthy conservative household but when one of their children lets someone from the outside into their fortress, all hell breaks loose since the people after him want the family to give him up so they can kill him and, if not, they’ll kill everyone. As you can imagine this will turn into a pretty intense home invasion thriller.
To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of this film until yesterday but it comes out at the end of May and I’m eager to see it. Though the trailer doesn’t seem to show much of what happens outside of this home, I still love home invasion thrillers so I’m content with the result. I do think this concept should be explored more as its ripe for the horror genre.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. The Purge opens on May 31st
If on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would you do? In The Purge, a speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home. In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—becomes legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It’s one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin’s (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide.
