As we continue to creep closer to the end of the year we’ll start hearing more and more news with regards to the 86th Academy Awards and the films vying for a nomination. Up until now we’ve only known of some of the foreign film submissions but now we can add another category with awards contenders, animated features. Today the Academy has unveiled the 19 submissions for the Best Animated Feature category and while there are a bunch of well known films, there are a few foreign candidates which haven’t had their required release yet, hence why I can’t comment on any of them.
It looks like this will be a tough category and there are certainly enough films to completely fill the five nomination slots available. I’ve only seen four of the films, three of which are mainstream titles, and I think it’s safe to say The Wind Rises and Monsters University will get nominations with The Croods having a good shot as well. I’m pretty sure Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Epic, Despicable Me 2, Free Birds, Planes and The Smurfs 2 will get nixed (though I liked Despicable Me).
Check out the full list of contenders below and be sure to stay tuned for more Oscar info as it becomes available.
