So today is the last day of 2009, congratulations for making it through another year of cinematic ups and downs. I have decided not to make a top 10 list but rather a list of movies I enjoyed or hated. I have categorized them appropriately as the number one film in categories that I have made up. Granted, I haven’t had the opportunity to watch some of the movies that are award worthy so please bare with me if I have left them off. Check out the fun list after the jump
Overall Best Movie of the Year: District 9
Most Original Story: District 9 (Read my review here for an explanation)
Best 3D/Visually stunning movie: Avatar (see it in IMAX 3d and you will know why. you can read my review here)
Best Animated Movie: Coraline / UP (I just can’t decide)
Coraline get’s my nod for its utterly trippy and original nature while UP get’s it for its originality and the emotional rollercoaster ride it takes you on.
Most Insane Action movie of the Year: Crank 2 (shaky cam plus extremely unrealistic action never looked so good)
Coolest, and Continually EnjoyableMmovie of the Year: Taken (Liam Neeson is the man and nothing is cooler than him looking for revenge)
Best Vengeful Movie: Inglorious Basterds
Best Performance: Christoph Waltz [Inglorious Basterds] (Read how much I liked him here)
Most epic movie of the Year: Star Trek (I think they are trying to re-launch the franchise to a younger generation, it might be working)
Best Comedy: The Hangover (“It’s funny because he’s fat”)
Best Violent Comedy: Zombieland (This movie has the best cameo ever! Plus, it was actually really good and you can read why here)
The Best ‘What the Fuck’ Movie: Antichrist (Chaos reigns all over this F’d up movie and find out why here)
Best Movie Title: Ninja Assassin (that is all plus a video review here)
Best Foreign Film: Nanjing Nanjing [City of Life and Death]—(crazy story, excellent cinematography)
Best Foreign Film that I Have Yet to See: Let the Right One In (which is sitting in my room)
Honorable Mentions: Moon (???), Bronson (like a clockwork orange), Invictus (because I love rugby! Watch review here)
Biggest Surprises: Paranormal Activity (Horror-read my review here), Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Animated)
Biggest Disappointments: Terminator Salvation, Public Enemies, Transformers 2, Angels and Demons, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (You all know why these movies made this part of my list)
Biggest Pieces of Crap:I love you Beth Cooper, Observe and Report, Dance Flick, Adventureland, Year One, Land of the Lost (They don’t deserve hyperlinks)
Some of the movies I have yet to see but will be include: The Road, Crazy Heart, The Hurt Locker, A serious Man, Up in the Air (although I met Jason Reitman I wasn’t able to get into the screening), The Lovely Bones, The Messengers, Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Brothers, Me and Orson Wells, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Blind Side, Precious, Red Cliff, and the Informant
On the whole, box office records are continually being smashed and we can thank all the blockbusters and random surprises of this year for that (whether how good or bad they were). I can’t wait for 2010 and I hope I will see you all at the movies.
This is Alessandro signing out and wishing you all a happy new year!
