Oh, October: You certainly have crept up on us again, haven’t you? Which means horror fans near and wide flock to the Mile High Horror Film Festival held in Denver, CO, just to see the newest horror films being released, some oldies (but goodies), and a few celebrities who decide to stop by and hang with us locals for four days.
This year’s 6th annual MHHFF decided to bring us a very special surprise though. A screening of the newest Jack Black film Goosebumps. And, not only just a screening of the film: The lead actors, including Mr. Black himself, were in attendance as well. Flying in and out of Denver, these four professional actors handled themselves very well with the fangirls (and boys) clamoring to get up close and meet them, with the stars even sticking around to sign everyone’s movie poster that had been provided to each person viewing the film.
Thus began the kickoff of the MHHFF and, although there were sold out shows every which way you looked, this lucky gal was able to grab a few tickets for some of the highlights of this year’s horror film releases. Reviews to follow later throughout the week for each one!
A Christmas Horror Story
Come visit Bailey Downs (the small town featured in the movie Ginger Snaps), which isn’t as boring as it was before. Narrated by the town’s seemingly only radio disc jockey DJ Dangerous Dan (William Shatner), we are met with an anthology of characters who are all embracing the spirit of the night (including zombie elves and the almighty Krampus).
Body
On Christmas Eve, three girl friends have decided they had enough of the boring yuletide and head over to one of the girl’s relatives homes. While having a little fun, there is a dreadful accident and the girls must not only decide their fate; but the fate of an innocent person.
The Final Girls
This is the one most of us comedy/horror fans have been waiting months for. In The Final Girls, a young girl named Max (Taissa Farmiga) has to deal with the loss of her mother, who played Nancy in the fictional 1980’s slasher film ‘Camp Bloodbath’ (as well as in the sequel ‘Camp Bloodbath 2′). It’s the movie’s anniversary, Max is dragged to the viewing, and, in a twist of fate, the gang enters through the theater’s screen, only to find themselves stuck in the movie. Can Max save her friends, her mother, and still live to become the final girl?
Tales of Halloween
In the second of the two Halloween anthologies premiering at the MHHFF, Tales of Halloween brings us such ghoulish tales from such iconic horror talents such as Neil Marshall (The Descent), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II), and Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider). Whether it’s a story about a kidnapping gone wrong, or a character dealing with a ‘sweet tooth’, we are in for a hell of a ride this All Hallows Eve.
Like stated above, all reviews are to follow shortly. But, in the meantime, enjoy this short the also premiered at the 2015 MHHFF. One of my favorites for sure, it combined everything that the festival continues to bring to us (quite a few scares, a few nervous laughs, and creativity abound).
Self-Assembly
Directed by Ray Sullivan, Self-Assembly tells the tale of a mother and a father who unfortunately had lost their son, and find in a cabinet a monstrous surprise.
See you next year Mile High Horror Film Festival!
