The Keanu Reeves movie 47 Ronin is a movie that has been on the backburner for so long I actually forgot it was coming out. It was shot way back in the summer of 2011 and was originally scheduled for a November 21, 2012 release. Then a bunch of stuff happened, which we could sum up as “going over budget to the point that the furious studio reportedly removes director Carl Erik Rinsch from the film.” That was over a year ago and there has been little news about the film since, so looks like any trouble was nipped in the bud.
Regardless of all that, the film is finally scheduled for a release on December 25 and we finally have a trailer. And while this just-released trailer looks very cool, if I were Universal I’d be really concerned that its being released the same day as August: Osage County, Grudge Match, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Justin Bieber: Believe (well, maybe not the Justin Bieber one. I doubt 47 Ronin has the same audience). It’s also less than two weeks after the releases of American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Her, and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, and only two days before Universal’s own Lone Survivor. In other words, this is a REALLY crowded Christmas movie season, and I’m not sure if there’s a place for 47 Ronin. If it ends up being a good film I really hope it finds an audience.
After watching the trailer, let us know in the comments your thoughts on the movie’s chances.
