It is officially awards season in Hollywood and just yesterday morning, this year’s Golden Globe nominations were announced with lots of surprises, snubs, and deserving favorites! The Hollywood Foreign Press is the organization behind this celebration of achievement in film and television, but we’ll have to wait until Sunday, January 16th 2011 to see who the winners are. However, this collection of performers should make for one of the most memorable ceremonies in years. Hit the jump to see who made the list!
Probably the most talked about categories are for best picture, but what’s so great about this awards show, as opposed to the Oscars, is the divide between comedy and drama. As opposed to just one category of films, the ten motion pictures compete within their genre.
Check out the list below:
Best Motion Picture, Drama
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
The Social NetworkBest Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist
Now, I’ve only seen a total of five of these films, but personally, I have my heart set on Inception and Burlesque to bring home the Globe, but perhaps the likely candidates to receive the trophies are the critically acclaimed favorites like either Black Swan or The Social Network and most likely The Kids Are All Right. Although Red was certainly an entertaining ride of laughs and action, I was surprised to see it on this list that also included the recent box-office flop, The Tourist (which I’ll be waiting to see on DVD).
As far as I can tell, there was a lot of buzz behind Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, starring Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard, but the film was nowhere to be found. Some bloggers are even scratching their heads over the absence of a nod for True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin due out next weekend. And, where was Never Let Me Go, Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, The Secretariat, or The Town on this list?
Also, the year’s biggest animated hit was Toy Story 3, which was neglected among the Motion Picture nominees, yet its 1999 second installment won the award for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. And, the first of the franchise back in 1995 was nominated in the same category, but lost to Babe.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
Jesse Eisenberg – The Social Network
Colin Firth – The King’s Speech
James Franco – 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling – Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg – The FighterBest Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy
Johnny Depp – Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp – The Tourist
Paul Giamatti – Barney’s Version
Jake Gyllenhaal – Love and Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey – Casino JackBest Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Christian Bale – The Fighter
Michael Douglas – Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Andrew Garfield – The Social Network
Jeremy Renner – The Town
Geoffrey Rush – The King’s Speech
In the drama category, it’s pretty clear that the press loves now two-time nominee Colin Firth for his royal portrayal of King George VI, but he is competing with Hollywood’s face for Facebook, first-time nominee Jesse Eisenberg.
I’ve heard so much about Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter, whose nomination is befitting. It seems that when there’s a boxing film out (like Cinderella Man, Ali, The Hurricane), moviegoers automatically make a trophy clamor over it, but perhaps this is deservedly so since the entire lead cast earned nominations.
It was a pleasant surprise to see Johnny Depp’s name appear twice on the list, making me wonder what part of The Tourist makes it a comedy when it was marketed as an espionage thriller with an underlying love story. I never even heard of the films that Paul Giamatti and Kevin Spacey were nominated for, but seeing as how they’re accomplished actors with impressive resumés, both Academy Award favorites, these seem like formidable additions.
Where’s Ben Affleck for The Town or Leonardo DiCaprio for Inception? Also, the internet is swarming about last year’s winner Jeff Bridges and his role in True Grit. I think I read somewhere along the way that someone was touting a flag for Will Ferrell’s comedic performance in The Other Guys. And, what about Jim Carrey for I Love You Philip Morris or even a tender yet comedic Zach Galifianakis for It’s Kind of a Funny Story?
As for the supporting roles, I know Christian Bale is a Movie Buzzers favorite, but Andrew Garfield’s breakout role in The Social Network was also a shoe-in for a nod. Justine Timberlake is obviously disappointed in his absence from the list for the same film, but where’s Mark Ruffalo for The Kids Are All Right. I heard lots that this was the first film in which he was actually good!
Since The Social Network racked up a bunch of nominations, Armie Hammer’s double portrayal of those spoiled Winklevoss twins was definitely worth a nod, but at least Jeremy Renner’s powerhouse performance in The Town wasn’t forgotten.
Could we possibly venture to guess that Michael Douglas’ inclusion among the nominees may just be a sympathy vote due to his public battle with throat cancer? I didn’t see the Wall Street sequel, but I didn’t hear very much praise about it either. At least Shia LaBeouf didn’t make the list! Douglas should’ve been nominated for Solitary Man instead.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama
Halle Berry – Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman – Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence – Winter’s Bone
Natalie Portman – Black Swan
Michelle Williams – Blue ValentineBest Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy
Anne Hathaway – Love and Other Drugs
Julianne Moore – The Kids Are All Right
Annette Bening – The Kids Are All Right
Emma Stone – Easy A
Angelina Jolie – The TouristBest Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Amy Adams – The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter – The King’s Speech
Mila Kunis – Black Swan
Melissa Leo – The Fighter
Jacki Weaver – Animal Kingdom
These lead categories are filled with previous nominees and winners, with the exception of Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence, two young names that have gained a great deal of accolades this year for their rising star meter.
I would say that the closest competition for the drama category exists between Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman, but since Black Swan is at the top of most nominee lists for other awards. Yet, I think it’s safe to say that it’s Portman’s turn to bring home the globe (especially having already won back in 2004 for Closer), even though Kidman‘s part in the riveting Rabbit Hole is supposed to be the most vulnerable and raw of her career.
As for the comedy roles, I would love to see Stone win! Yet, one of the stars of The Kids Are All Right would be easiest critical choice for winner this year, especially since Julianne Moore is now a six-time nominee. Annette Bening has been nominated a total of seven times now and took home a trophy in 2004 for Being Julia.
The supporting actress category features previous favorites like three-time nominee Amy Adams and six-time nominee Helena Bonham Carter, but the biggest news surrounds That ‘70s Show alum Mila Kunis as Portman’s ballerina rival. There’s also the unknown Australian actress Jacki Weaver for the crime drama Animal Kingdom which also stars Guy Pearce.
Yet there’s nothing for Keira Knightley or Carey Mulligan for Never Let Me Go, Christina Aguilera or Cher for Burlesque, Julia Roberts for Eat Pray Love (who was even nominated last year for Duplicity!), Gwyneth Paltrow for Country Strong, Noomi Rapace for the international hit The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Mia Wasikowska for Alice in Wonderland, or lastly, Marion Cotillard for Inception. Not to mention, I even read somewhere about disappointment over Reese Witherspoon’s non-nomination for the upcoming How Do You Know, which would’ve been an understandable choice over Jolie in the comedy division of actresses.
Best Director – Motion Picture
Darren Aronofsky – Black Swan
David Fincher – The Social Network
Tom Hooper – The King’s Speech
Christopher Nolan – Inception
David O. Russell – The Fighter
All of these films have made a big impact this year, but nothing for Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours or Clint Eastwood for Hereafter has ruffled a few online and critical feathers, but perhaps those names will appear on other lists. Ben Affleck’s attempt with The Town was also forgotten from this list.
Best Animated Feature Film
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Toy Story 3
Tangled
Here is where Toy Story 3 will win the Golden Globe since it was not included in the Best Motion Picture category, in spite of the recent box-office success of Tangled.
Best Original Song – Motion Picture
“Bound to You” – Burlesque
“Coming Home” – Country Strong
“I See the Light” – Tangled
“There’s a Place for Us” – Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
“You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” – Burlesque
It seems that blondes and bombshells have taken over this category with “Coming Home” sung by Gwyneth Paltrow, “There’s A Place for Us,” performed and co-written by Carrie Underwood, and “I See The Light” recorded by Mandy Moore. However, this is where we see Christina Aguilera rightfully honored, as she co-wrote “Bound To You,” but the Diane Warren-penned power ballad sung by Cher in Burlesque could very well take home the trophy. To make some early predictions, wouldn’t it be fantastic to see all of these female stars performing these songs on one stage in one night?
