Kirsten Dunst stars in the new end-of-the-world sci-fi drama Melancholia, written and directed by Lars von Trier (Dogville). IMDB tells us that the film is about “two sisters [who] find their relationship challenged as a nearby planet threatens to collide into the Earth.” The film even earned a coveted Palme d’Or nomination at this year’s Cannes film festival.
Dunst plays Justine, and Charlotte Gainsbourg is her sister, Claire. Originally, Penelope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) was set to star in the movie, according to Movie Fone. Also, we know that the cast includes John Hurt (Harry Potter), Kiefer Sutherland (24), Charlotte Rampling (Never Let Me Go), Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), and Stellan Skarsgard (Thor).
The websitealso gives us these details behind the story, as well as von Trier’s production: “The films follows the effect on a family at the news that a distant planet, Melancholia, is on its way to collide with Earth. Recently-married Justine becomes more reflective, whilst her relationships with her sister and close family start to come apart, as each deals with the impending doom. Trier filmed ‘Melancholia’ in his usual style – not rehearsing the actors and letting them improvise, whilst he gave slight guidance between takes. It is his first feature length movie since 2009’s graphic and highly controversial Antichrist, and Trier has revealed that ‘Melancholia’ will be the first of his films to have an unhappy ending.”
The movie is also gaining a lot of buzz because we haven’t seen Dunst on screen all that much in recent years. The actress last appeared in All Good Things with Ryan Gosling, however she entered rehab for depression sometime after 2008’s How to Make Friends & Alienate People.
Check out the film’s official website for more information on the film that will premiere in Denmark on May 26th. No other details behind the movie’s release are known as of yet, but you can check out the trailer here and let us know if you’d see this thriller.
