Bridesmaids was not particularly a film I had intended on seeing because of the fear of it being a cheesy chick flick comedy, which I’m sure a lot of other people are thinking but, I am pleased to say, that after watching the film my opinion has changed and I can’t remember the last time I truly laughed that hard during a movie.
Annie’s (Kristen Wiig) life is a total mess and it only becomes more complicated when her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), becomes engaged and asks Annie to be her Maid of Honor. Annie’s life has practically hit rock bottom with her bakery business going under due to the recession, her boyfriend leaving her, forced to live with a brother and sister from England, working a job her mother found for her at a jewelry store and, to top it all off, she’s broke. As if things couldn’t get any worse for Annie, Lillian has recently become friends with her fiancé’s boss’ wife, Helen (Rose Byrne) who is determined to become the Maid of Honor and will do whatever it takes. Determined to give her best friend the best wedding experience, Annie, along with a group of colorful bridesmaids, (Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper) embark on a wild ride up until the big day.
The film was written by Wigg along with Annie Mumolo and I must say that I am very impressed with the comedic style they brought to the film. From the opening sex scene between Wigg and Jon Hamm all the way to the ending credits, the film offers non-stop laughs and entertainment for both men and women.
For the most part, I felt like everyone in the film did an exceptional job but there was one actress who really stood out and without her, I don’t feel the movie would have been the same. Melissa McCarthy was hands down the funniest part in the film. Her entire personality and the delivery of her lines made her an instant classic for the film and will be the role everyone remembers and talks about. Be sure to stay a little after the credits because there is an additional scene with Melissa and it is so outlandish, you will be glad you stayed. Also every great comedy has its one iconic and most memorable scene in the film, for Bridesmaids it’s the scene where they are trying on the dresses after eating at a Brazilian style restaurant. Hands down the funniest scene in the film!
I really don’t have anything bad to say about the entire film. It was everything you could really ask for in a comedy and will for sure be a hit even after its run in the theaters. I do want to say though that towards the middle, the film take a more serious turn and seems to drag just a little bit, but this is a Judd Apatow film, so this is to be expected.
So in the end, I strongly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a great comedy. I do see it having a Hangover effect and may fall a little short at first at the box office, but, because of word of mouth, the film will end up being a success and will probably see and increase the following week. Also if you are a child of the 90’s you are in for a real treat at the end of the film during the wedding, so I won’t spoil it!
Rating: A mildly raunchy comedy that will keep you laughing for the entire two hours 9/10
