I’m all for diversity, but does it make sense to take an actor off a film project just because of the color of his skin? Of course not!
Arrow In The Head is reporting that Dark Castle, which is headed by producer Joel Silver, is demanding that the upcoming Sylvester Stallone movie Headshot recast the role that Thomas Jane (The Punisher, The Mist) has already been cast in. Why? Well, Silver and his company wants the film to be more “ethnic”, and since the white guy/black guy action movie dynamic worked so well for Silver in 48 Hrs. (also directed by Headshot director Walter Hill), the Lethal Weapon series, Demolition Man, and The Last Boy Scout, the production company wants Jane‘s role to be filled by a non-white actor.
Sure, that worked for those movies, but if Stallone and Hill think Jane is the best choice, why hire another actor instead simply because he has a different skin color? There are dozens of successful action movies that involve people of all different races. This decision makes no sense, and, let’s be honest, either Stallone or Hill‘s people probably leaked this story to get fans outraged. Both Stallone and Hill have been in the game long enough to know what makes a successful action movie, so I’d think that Silver and Dark Castle would let them do their thing. After all, will adding a non-white actor REALLY add much to the gross of the film? Should Hill just trash the script and cast one of Will Smith‘s kids instead?
Walter Hill (The Warriors) will direct the film, based on the script by Alessandro Camon (The Messenger). It is based on a series of French graphic novels by Alexis Nolent and Colin Wilson.
