Before I had even seen Andre Ovredal’s fantastic docu-style film, Troll Hunter, Universal had already acquired the rights to remake it here in the states. On Friday, it looks like things are starting to take shape because Chris Columbus’ 1942 Pictures and CJ Entertainment & Media have just acquired the remake rights themselves. Chris Columbus is known for scripting films like Gremlins, The Goonies and directing classics like Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire.
Synopsis: “Troll Hunter (Trolljegeren) is a documentary about a group of students who discover what they believe is a government conspiracy to keep the existence of trolls in the north of Norway hidden from the general public.”
When Deadline broke the news about the film, Chris Columbus had this to say:
Troll Hunter was a visceral, thrilling, cinematic rock and roller coaster ride of a movie. Visually, there are scenes in this film that American audiences have never seen. We want to introduce an international audience to this amazing moviegoing experience
While I definitely agree with the above quote, I think what makes Troll Hunter so special is that it’s a Norwegian folklore film that was made by Norwegians and filmed by Norwegians. It is a subject that is close to their heart and one they know a lot about. Now I can’t say I’m completely against the remake, but I wish the original had time to breathe in the states so that others could take notice before a US remake begins. If it was done more like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films where there were a couple of years in between the US premiere and the premiere of the US remake. I do know that Overdal is all for a remake and is excited to see how it translates into English, but I wonder if has any concerns about it.
Troll Hunter is currently out in theaters and on VOD. Both Melissa and I have written up very positive reviews of the film and have given extensive coverage of the film here.
