The Hollywood Reporter has posted a very interesting interview with Tom Hanks‘ Playtone producing partner Gary Goetzman about some of the upcoming projects the company is currently looking into.
The first was about their adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s novel, American Gods, which is currently being eyed as an HBO series. The project will keep Neil Gaiman on board as both a writer and executive producer for the show and are suggesting that the series be set for six season with ten to twelve episodes a season. The budget for the series in in the $35 to 40 million range per season, which is pretty usual for an HBO series now.
When asked about the FX for the show, Goetzman said,
There are some crazy things in there. We’ll probably be doing more effects in there than it’s been done on a television series
The second major news from Playtone was that they are developing a movie based on the Green Day CD and musical, American Idiot. Michael Mayer is set to direct the film and is also the director of the stage version. Not much is know about the film besides that Green Day’s lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong would be playing the main role of St. Jimmy.
Goetzman explains that they are always looking at musicals and explains their outlook when it comes to musicals in today’s society.
“If we can do that, it’d be a genre that’s as respected as any produced by the studios. Maybe there will be three musicals a year, maybe five. I think that’s important otherwise we’d just have this tentpole mentality where if it’s not based on a comic book or cost $200 million, you’re stacked in like pillars. We need all these genres to be respected and we need the studios not to be afraid of them,”
If you have never heard the CD or seen the musical, you are missing out on one of the greatest Ballard’s of our time. The CD is hands down their best of their career and they should have just stopped there as oppose to putting out their latest CD/Ballard, 21 Century Breakdown.
Playtone is looking to capitalize on their second musical after the success of their first, Mamma Mia!, which grossed over $600 million worldwide.I don’t think American Idiot will do that well, but it’s very possible. Green Day is huge overseas and have been around for quite some time.
