If you’re a sucker for extreme, heart-wrenching romances like The Time Traveler’s Wife, The End of the Affair, and The Notebook (or anything else that Nicholas Sparks wrote because I know I walked out of Nights in Rodanthe with a bad case of the blues), then break out your biggest tissue box for The Vow , starring Rachel McAdams (Midnight in Paris) and Channing Tatum (Dear John). According to IMDB, “A car accident puts Paige (McAdams) in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo (Tatum) works to win her heart again.”
Brought to us by director Michael Sucsy (Emmy winner for HBO’s Grey Gardens), Sucsy is just one of the many writers behind the foundation of this movie’s script. This includes TV writer Jason Katims (who’s got episodes of My So-Called Life, Boston Public, and Friday Night Lights under his belt), as well as writing partners Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (Valentine’s Day, He‘s Just Not That Into You, Never Been Kissed).
The supporting cast includes Sam Neill (Legend of The Guardians) and Jessica Lange (Grey Gardens), who are not shown in the film’s trailer, but there’s a quick glimpse at Scott Speedman (Barney‘s Version) who gets punched out by Tatum. We could only guess why…
With a Valentine’s week release set for next year on February 10th, this could be a hit or miss. After all, the previously mentioned Nicholas Sparks is no where near this project, but it has the word “sappy” written all over it. For the sake of not leaving the theater with streams of mascara running down my face, and for fear of my drowsy boyfriend driving us home from what I’m sure he’ll think is a snooze fest of melodrama, I think I’ll save watching this very emotional and maybe predictable tearjerker by my lonesome on some rainy day in the comfort of my own hopelessly romantic abode.
With all joking aside, perhaps there’s a lesson to be learned here since we so often see in movies how relationships unravel with deteriorating shreds of dignity being chopped up like bacon bits. Take Blue Valentine with Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling for example (from what I’ve heard from it), or even Last Night with Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes, and Sam Worthington. Maybe with the amnesia element in The Vow, we can look to our own relationships and figure out how to get that honeymoon phase spark back or how to fall in love all over again.
However, if this sounds like your kind of story, by all means, check out the movie’s trailer below and let us know what you think. Do you like the idea of McAdams paired up with Tatum? Would you bring your gal pals to see this or drag a significant other along?
