If you are a fan of baseball then there is a good chance that you’ve heard of the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis. It is based on the story of the 2002 Oakland Athletics who utilized a different means of judging talent to make the most of their significantly smaller payroll compared to their bigger city rivals like the Yankees. Using these alternative methods, the A’s soon became a serious threat to those in their division and conference which stunned the rest of the professionals involved with the MLB because of how different their approach to management was.
In the film adaptation, which was was scripted by Steven Zaillian (Gangs of New York) and Aaron Sorkin (Social Network), we see Brad Pitt starring as the A’s general manager, Billy Beane, as he tries to build a team on a shoe string budget using computer-generated analysis to draft his players. Jonah Hill plays Peter Brand who is the man behind the statistical analysis and Beane’s assistant GM. Other notable cast members include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright and baseball legend, Darryl Strawberry. Moneyball is directed by Bennett Miller (Capote)
Although I haven’t read the book, I’ve heard phenomenal things about it and this trailer looks to be living up to those high expectations that were set upon me. The cast seems fitting for this alternative sports drama that seems to be more about the office than the actual players, which is something you don’t see too often. What’s nice about the trailer, and probably the movie, is that you don’t have to be a fan of baseball to appreciate what is going on in the film and how a couple of people revolutionized the way business was conducted in a very established sport league.
