Considering the genre’s popularity, we don’t tend to see many Neo-Noir films released from the major studios. While they don’t tend to make much money, they certainly are popular and critically acclaimed, with films like L.A. Confidential, Pulp Fiction, and The Usual Suspects winning Oscars in the 1990s. Mark Wahlberg appeared in one of the best crime films of the last few years, The Departed, and just did a boxing film — a typical Noir staple — with The Fighter, and is a producer on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, so the man must know something about crime movies. That’s why it’s welcome news that Deadline reports that Wahlberg and director Allen Hughes (The Book of Eli) are in talks to film Broken City, a Neo-Noir script by Brian Tucker that has been floating around Hollywood since 2008.
Deadline provides the following plot summary of the film, explaining that it is “a noir-style drama about an ex-cop turned private detective who is hired by the mayor to see if his wife is cheating on him. When the mayor’s wife’s cheating partner ends up dead, the private eye immerses himself in the mayor’s business and uncovers a real estate scandal that involves dealing himself choice city-owned properties.” Sounds like Chinatown, and I love Chinatown!
There’s a lot that can happen before this film gets off the ground, but these details alone have me interested. What’s your thoughts?
