Out of all the studios that attended this year, Sony had the most to bring to the table. Not only did they bring The Amazing Spider-Man and 30 Minutes or Less, they also gave us our first look at Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
The panel started with a behind the scenes look at how the directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor shot the film on roller blades and flying through the air on wires. I really hope this video becomes available to the public because these two guys are absolutely crazy and will do whatever it takes to get that perfect shot. After the footage, the directors and a few cast members came out on stage. In attendance were Nicholas Cage, who is reprising his role as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider, Idris Elba and Johnny Whitworth as Blackout.
After the cast came out we got our first look at some footage for the film. The film takes place about 3-5 years after the end of the first film. Johnny Blaze has since embraced his Ghost Rider persona and is living life as best as possible. Since becoming Ghost Rider he has gradually begun to lose his mind and has become more of a nightmarish individual as oppose to the first one. The scenes were very quick but what I can remember from it is there is a lot of chase scenes and a lot of guns. Additionally, Ghost rider has a new Hell Bike in this, but in actuality he is able to turn whatever he touches into a Hell something. For example in the scenes he takes control of this huge machine that is use to cut through mountains and it takes on the burnt and flame appearance much like the bike. The best scene that we were shown was at the end when Ghost rider was surrounded by a bunch of guys and they open fire on him. He opens his mouth and eats the bullets and spits them back at the men. It was pretty sick looking.
After the clip a few of the audience members were able to ask questions to the cast and directors but none of them really lead to anything interesting. Probably the most interesting one was asked to Elba about his future and if he plans on doing more superhero movies. His response was Luke Cage! Although he followed it up with a, “I would really like to play the role and nothing has been confirmed.”
Overall, I was more impressed with the film than I anticipated. The directors are the guys who did the Crank movies so we can expect one hell of a ride. I was one of the few people I think that actually liked the first Ghost Rider, so based on what the directors said about making the film more mature and more nightmarish, I’m now looking forward to the film even more. It is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2012.
