George Clooney plays a presidential candidate in the upcoming political drama, The Ides of March, which he co-wrote, directed, and produced. You got to love that — Clooney is well known for supporting political causes, and I’m sure he got a kick out of writing himself the role and playing someone with political aspirations (and notice how in the trailer the other characters can’t help but say great things about him?)
Anyway, on to the trailer: We’ve got Ryan Gosling, press secretary of Governor Mike Morris’ presidential campaign, doing… something that’s scandalous and might hurt his chances and pisses off Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It appears that he wants to switch sides at some point to join Paul Giammatti‘s side, and we got Marisa Tormei in there somewhere. Honestly it’s a bit tough trying to figure out what’s going on here, since it’s mostly soundbites. The film is based on the play Farragut North, which was loosely based on Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential primary campaign (does that mean we’re going to hear Clooney go “BYAHHHHHHHHH!”?) I’m guessing it has to do with betrayal since, after all, The Ides of March was the famous day that Julius Caesar was betrayed by his closest friends. No matter what it’s about, it still looks like interesting stuff with an impressive cast.
The film’s synopsis, like the trailer, is short on the details:
The Ides of March takes place during the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, when an up-and-coming campaign press secretary (Ryan Gosling) finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency.
The film is set for an October 7th release. Check out the trailer below!
