I recently reported twice about the ongoing rumors surrounding a possible prequel to Sex & the City, based on Candace Bushnell’s books, The Carrie Diaries and Summer in the City. According to Deadline, the HBO show runner and executive producer Michael Patrick King has announced that he has no plans to develop the film which would follow Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha, and Miranda from their teens to their 20s.
During a TCA panel for King’s new CBS sitcom Broke Girls, he explained how he feels about Bushnell’s back story with: “I haven’t read Candace’s Bushnell’s books… My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33 and I took her to 43 — I don’t even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw’s parents are … the idea of going backward, making her less evolved, is something that I can’t even imagine doing. I have no connection to the prequel.”
Some may find this news to be disappointing, considering King’s commitment to the television show, as well as writing and directing the two movies that followed the series’ end. Even Carrie Bradshaw herself, Sarah Jessica Parker has expressed zero interest in seeing her character’s younger version coming to the Big Apple for the first time.
Movie Buzzers reported that a prospective cast was in the making, which included Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) as Carrie, Blake Lively (Green Lantern) as Samantha, Selena Gomez (Monte Carlo) as Charlotte, and Emma Roberts (Scream 4) as Miranda.
However, this doesn’t mean that someone else in Hollywood won’t swoop in to develop the novels, but without King and Parker’s blessings, how successful could the project be? Do you think the movie has a future without Michael Patrick King? Are you interested in seeing these actresses take on the start of the fabulous four?
