Now I know that most of us wouldn’t write a blank check to a movie director without seeing a finished script first, but when that director is Robert Rodriguez — known for making big movies on small budgets — and the films are sequels to the successful Sin City (which made $74 million on a $40 million budget) and Machete (which made $26.5 million on a $10.5 million budget) films, it’s probably a good bet.
In an interview with We Got this Covered promoting his upcoming Spy Kids: All The Time In the World, Rodriguez spoke a bit about the sequels, adding a bit more info than he revealed at Comic-Con. Rodriguez says “Sin City 2 is going good, we’re just finishing the script for that, we already got the money. We have everything we need so we can just start shooting as soon as we get the pages. And it’s the same thing for Machete 2. We’ve already got the budget, just waiting for the script. As soon as we’re finished writing we get to start the shoot.”
At Comic-Con, Rodriguez revealed that Sin City 2 would consist of the A Dame To Kill For graphic novel along with an original story written by comic creator Frank Miller, The Long, Bad Night. There’s no word on casting, but several Sin City regulars like Marv, Dwight, and Nancy (portrayed by Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, and Jessica Alba in the first film) are featured in A Dame To Kill For. As for Machete 2, it is titled Machete Kills and is expected to be followed by a sci-fi threequel, Machete Kills Again In Space.
