Hey, if he needs the money maybe he can melt down those Oscars… gold is through the roof these days!
It wasn’t a big surprise that Universal Studios canceled Ron Howard‘s ambitious film and television mega-project adaptation of Stephen King‘s seven (soon to be eight) book Dark Tower series for budgetary reasons. After all, it would have likely been the most expensive entertainment media project in history. Although I’m a big Dark Tower fan, I didn’t have much of a problem with the cancellation — I’m not entirely sure if the books would translate well to film, and, even if so, I’m not convinced Ron Howard would be the right director for the project.
Nonetheless, I admire Howard‘s tenacity, as he — along with frequent producing partner Brian Grazer, who is otherwise known as having the worst hair in Hollywood (though he makes great movies) — The New York Post reveals that the duo are looking for “outside financing” to keep the project going, and, more surprisingly, if the television series doesn’t get picked up the possibility of a direct-to-Netflix series (like the upcoming House of Cards) is possible. The article does add that Javier Bardem is still attached as Roland, which is good news.
In the meantime, however, Howard has moved on to direct Rush, a biopic about Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda starring Daniel Bruhl, so if financing can be secured we probably won’t see the first Dark Tower until 2014 at the earliest.
