I don’t think I ever posted the original confirmation that Spike Lee was remaking Park Chan-wook‘s Oldboy for Mandate Pictures, it was just too disheartening to know that it actually was going to happen (it was on my top 10 list of modern classics that should never be remade). Originally, Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were rumored to be attached and then the film made a complete 180 and Spike Lee was chosen. In the end, the big question was who would be playing the lead in Spike Lee’s version of the film.
Today deadline broke the news that Josh Brolin would be holding the hammer in the US version of this sick and twisted thriller. And while that doesn’t seem to be too bad of a choice, since Brolin can pull off the crazy hair look, the question now remains who will be the villain and female lead because those roles are just as important as the one Brolin just filled. I will remain skeptical about this until I see the full length feature since Oldboy is one of my all-time favorite films.
For those of you that don’t know anything about the film, I have posted the synopsis from the original below :
With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years — and no one to hold accountable for his suffering — a desperate businessman seeks revenge on his captors, relying on assistance from a friendly waitress. Korean director Chan Wook Park — a former philosophy student and Hitchcock devotee — uses his influences to create a mesmerizing psychological drama with a resolution that will leave you speechless. –Netflix
What are your thoughts on Josh Brolin being chosen as the lead in Spike Lee’s remake?
