Hit the jump for details and behind-the-scenes photos!
The film stars Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy) and Sam Riley (Control) as the lead protagonists, Dean and Sal, respectively. Additional stars include famous faces like Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) as Marylou, Kirsten Dunst (Marie Antoinette) as Camille, Amy Adams (The Fighter) as Jane, Viggo Mortenson (The Road) as Old Bull Lee- a character based on the beatnik writer William S. Burroughs, Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) as Galatea Dunkel, and Terrence Howard (The Ledge) as Walter. Other new names to the cast include British actor Tom Sturridge (Pirate Radio) as Carlo Marx- based on famous poet Allen Ginsberg- and Mexican actress Giovanna Zacarias (Sleep Dealer).
Responsible for the behind-the-scenes action is the successful duo behind The Motorcycle Diaries, director Walter Salles and screenwriter Jose Rivera. The legendary Francis Ford Coppola is also behind the production that is rumored to cost nearly $25 million.
According to Collider, the recently released photos during filming “appear to perfectly transcribe the poetic energy and black-and-white imagery that the story inevitably conjures up, raising the question whether the movie will also be in black-and-white.”
For those of you who don’t know- and should pick up the novel, skipping the abridged SparkNotes if truly interested in the story- HeyUGuys explains that “On the Road is a largely autobiographical work that was based on a road trip involving Kerouac and his friends across mid-century America, taking in and commenting on the cultural landscape they encountered on the way.” The novel was originally published in 1957, revealing the inspiration by means of experimentation with drugs, influences of jazz and poetry, rejection of materialism, and interest in Eastern religions.
There is no release date yet for the film, as it is still in production for the remainder of December, but these images will just have to do until an official trailer is made public.
