Scream 4 would not be what most would consider a successful box office hit this past spring. It ended up bringing in about $97 million during it’s theatrical run and was made for around $40 million. Some may think that is a pretty decent profit, although some studios would see this as a flop. Lucky for Scream fans, Wes Craven was part of the later and is now saying that Scream 5 is very likely to happen.
Craven recently did an interview with MovieWeb and confirmed the rumors that Scream 4 was intended to be the starter for a new trilogy.
Going into (Scream 4), the first meeting I had with Kevin Williamson, he did sketch out a Scream 5 and 6. The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.
He continued on with the expectation of the 4th film and his view on a 5th film:
The odds are that there will be (a Scream 5), It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be (another sequel).
There is still no guarantee that Craven will even be involved in the fifth film much less directing it. He has yet to receive a call for Weinstein about the future of the franchise, much less a letter from the studio. He did say that based on his contract, he will be given first look at anything and then will have the option on whether he wants to sign on or not.
Having not seen Scream 4, I’m not sure where the film could go or how it ended. If you have seen it please comment below and let us know if you feel a 5th and possibly even 6th film is needed or wanted.
