How does Quentin Tarantino go about replacing Kevin Costner after the Dances With Wolves star dropped out of Tarantino’s next film, Django Unchained? By getting Kurt Russell as a replacement, that’s how!
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Russell is “in talks” (read: all but confirmed or else we wouldn’t report it) to take the role of Ace, the slave trainer on the plantation owned by Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Costner bowed out of the role for other commitments, so Russell — who was one of the other bright spots in Tarantino’s slow-paced Death Proof, which also happened to be his last film — stepped up to take the role.
Kurt Russell is another actor who really hasn’t had many great roles in… well, he hasn’t had many good roles since he tore it up in the 1980s and the early 1990s. I’ve been a big fan of Russell since the first time I saw Escape From New York (one of my all-time favorite films) and I’m glad to see him get this well-deserved opportunity, as we all know Russell can really pull off a “nasty bastard” role quite well.
In other Django Unchained casting news, The Hollywood Reporter also has revealed that Laura Cayouette — who appeared as Rocket in Kill Bill: Volume 2 — has joined the film as the sister of DiCaprio’s character and co-owner of the plantation.
The rest of the cast includes Jamie Foxx as the title character, Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Django’s mentor and Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, the house slave of Calvin Candle. Production has been moved up from early next year to November for (likely) a December 2012 release.
