While I’ve been reporting on this potential project since March, we’ve gotten a step closer to what might be one the last never made sequels that people actually want to see. What’s that? Deadline is reporting that directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly have hired screenwriters Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine, She’s Out of My League, Sex Drive) to write the screenplay for a sequel to Dumb & Dumber. The Farrelly brothers have no desire to turn this into a debacle like the prequel Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (which they had absolutely no involvement with beyond creating the characters) and fully intend to get original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels involved along with original producers Charles B. Wessler, Brad Krevoy, and Steve Stabler.
Neither Carrey nor Daniels are known to be big on sequels (just think of how many franchises Carrey alone has destroyed by not appearing in the sequels), both the Farrelly brothers and Carrey have repeatedly expressed interest in revisiting Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, whose 1994 misadventure has since become an all-time comedy classic. Daniels, who unlike Carrey isn’t typically known for physical comedy (he’s a wonderful dramatic actor), might be the harder “get” in this case, but it could definitely put some dough in his pocket.
Of course, the Farrelly brothers are finishing up work on The Three Stooges and… well, they might need the hit afterward.
