One of the aspects of Bond 23, now titled Skyfall, that Daniel Craig said that he was most looking forward to is the return of the series’ “mythology” which was left out of his first two turns as Bond in favor of reinventing the franchise. According to the BBC, Craig will get part of his wish: Bond’s trusty gadget creator, Major Boothroyd, best known as Q, will return in Skyfall, and he will be played by Ben Whishaw (The Tempest, I’m Not There). Whishaw previously appeared with Daniel Craig in Layer Cake, the movie which is typically pointed out as the performance that nabbed Craig the James Bond role.
Most famously, Desmond Llewelyn played the role in 17 of the previous 22 Bond films before his death in 1999. Whishaw will be the first Q to actually be younger than the actor playing Bond, which should change the dynamic between the two characters on-screen. I’m wondering what kind of gizmos Q will design for the Craig Bond, as they’ll likely be more realistic than some of Bond’s more eccentric gadgets in the past films.
The script for Skyfall was written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have written the past four Bond films, and are joined by John Logan (Any Given Sunday, Gladiator) this time around. Naomie Harris will play a character named Eve (not Moneypenny, as previously reported), and Javier Bardem will play the film’s villain. Also in the cast is Albert Finney, Berenice Marlohe, Rhys Ifans and Ralph Fiennes, and Judi Dench will return as M. It is believed that part of the film will be set in South Africa, a first for Bond. The film is set for a worldwide release on November 9, 2012. As usual, the UK and Ireland will be getting the movie two weeks earlier on October 26.
