One of my favorite films that I saw in 2010 was Yoshihiro Nakamura’s end of the world, multi-plot driven feature, Fish Story. It’s a film that really only got attention from the online film outlets and never made it past the film festival circuit except in Japan and South Korea way back in 2009.
Well I’m happy to say that US residents can rejoice because a small distributor by the name of Pathfinder Pictures is bringing this brilliant Japanese picture to our DVD shelves on December 27th! The only downside is it getting released right after Christmas so there is no chance that you’ll find it under your tree this year. Below you’ll find all the details along with a trailer for the film. I promise you, if you are a fan of Japanese films then this is one worth seeking out and buying.
2012, Five hours before the comet crashes into the Earth. Only five hours left to Earth’s total annihilation. Everyone is doomed. The fatal comet that is about to crash into the Earth can be seen glowing across the sky. After America’s plan to blast the comet fails, everyone leaves the city to seek shelter. But only one record store remains open. Where 5 strangers are gathered to discuss and resolve the fate of the world.
A curt looking man in a wheelchair, Tanikuchi claims that the Earth is doomed. ‘The probability is 100%, not 99%.’ But the manager just calmly mumbles, ‘The Righteous Apostle will save the Earth’. The song, ‘Fish Story’ by a nameless 70s band can be heard playing on the record turn table. On the back of the album cover it says, ‘There is a silent pause during the song. It was put there by the song’s makers on purpose’.
Does this obscure, punk song contain the ingredients to save our way of life? That’s what these strangers will find out for us by revisiting the inception to “Fish Story”, travelling in time to 1975, 1982, 2007 and 2009 in this miracle drama waiting to thrill and save audiences around the world!
You can purchase the film here on December 27th for $24.98.
