As a big Sacha Baron Cohen fan I loved Borat but was really turned off by the one-joke Bruno film. I’m glad to see then that Cohen is returning to his “cultural clash” style in The Dictator. Though less than two minutes in length, there is a lot to like from this first trailer — after all, the lives of these insane dictators are comically absurd (if they weren’t so terrifying, that is). And why do they always seem to have wacky hair? The movie is reportedly an adaptation, in part, of a novel written by Saddam Hussein.
By the way, I had no idea that they filmed some of these scenes in New York — you’d figure you’d hear something about that, right?
Joining Cohen is John C. Reilly, Ben Kingsley, Anna Farris, Megan Fox, and Jason Mantzoukas, who will star with Cohen in the dual roles of the titular dictator and a goat herder. The Dictator is set for a May 11, 2012 release. The film is directed by frequent Cohen collaborator, Larry Charles, and the script is co-written by Cohen along with Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, who were all co-writers on Seinfeld and the film EuroTrip, although it’s clear that the film will likely require extensive improvisation.
