This year was full of fantastic films, but there were some that disappointed me. Below are 10 films that I expected to be better that, in the end, disappointed me to no avail. Do you agree?
On the night of the discovery of a duplicate planet in the solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident.- IMDB
I know Alex liked the film more than me (read his review here), but I was highly disappointed in the lack of science fiction. The story is kinda sweet, but just too typical in the love story.
A mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer soon discovers that he’s hiding a terrible secret.- IMDB
I was hoping for a thriller based on some of the trailers, but there is only a hint of it. Michael Fassbender is somehow unattractive and Mia Wasikowska is just way too weak to be taken seriously. It’s too slow and there is just no payoff.
L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both. – IMDB
Ok, so maybe the only reason I was looking forward to this was Alexander Skarsgård. I even put aside my annoyance for Kate Bosworth, but this movie was just scene after scene of people making the complete wrong decisions. It was unbelievably frustrating and I still need to see the original with Dustin Hoffman which will most definitely be better.
At the age of ten, Henry James Hermin, a boy who was conceived in a petri-dish and raised by his feminist mother, follows a string of Post-It notes in hopes of finding his biological father. – IMDB
This film is just trying way too hard to be quirky. I love Michael Sheen and Toni Colette, but their performances were lost in the many subplots and ridiculous poses for the camera.
Released from prison for a crime he didn’t commit, an ex-con targets the same bank he was sent away for robbing.- IMDB
Even the opening scene of Henry (Keanu Reeves) driving indicated the film was going to be terrible. Keanu is a robot in this role and completely sabotaged the great performance of Vera Farmiga. I kept wanting more and just couldn’t get past his performance (or lack of). This could have been such a sweet romantic caper.
When an alcoholic relapses, causing him to lose his wife and his job, he holds a yard sale on his front lawn in an attempt to start over. A new neighbor might be the key to his return to form.- IMDB
I love most anything Will Ferrell does and loved him in the more dramatic role in Stranger Than Fiction, so I was hoping to see that level in this film. However, the story just wasn’t there. All the elements were there, but there was really nothing to get it going and it relied far too much on the comedy of Will Ferrell.
In 13th-century England, a small group of Knights Templar fight to defend Rochester Castle against the tyrannical King John. – IMDB
I was looking forward to a action/drama based in the middle ages. Instead, I got Paul Giamatti as a terrible king and a ridiculous amount of blood and carnage. Brian Cox was amazing as a bad guy, but did not save the other performances and the crazy camerawork. Graham liked it though, (review here), so maybe I missed something…
A David and Goliath law drama about a drug-addicted lawyer who takes on a health supply corporation while battling his own personal demons. – IMDB
I didn’t know anything about this film before seeing it at the Tribeca Film Festival, and had high hopes when the credits at the beginning indicated this as based on a true story. (Chris Evans as on of the leads didn’t hurt either.) What followed was an amazing story, but told as fiction, it completely lost it’s impact. I’ll say it again. This should have been a documentary.
When the evil wizard, Gargamel, chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world into New York City.- IMDB
Hollywood pandered to the over 30 crowd and hoped they’d remember the cartoon and take their kids. Well, I don’t have kids, but I wanted to see it anyway. I mistakenly thought it would be entertaining, but instead it was just the blue version of Alvin and the Chipmunks. What I liked about the Smurfs was seeing their life in the forest and how each character had his own distinct personality. This story failed because it immediately took them out of their environment just to add in some humans. Even Neil Patrick Harris couldn’t save it.
A Marine Staff Sergeant who has just had his retirement approved goes back into the line of duty in order to assist a 2nd Lieutenant and his platoon as they fight to reclaim the city of Los Angeles from alien invaders. – IMDB
The advertising made this out to be battling aliens, and I LOVE a good alien movie, but this was just terrible. I laughed out loud several times, and not in the right places. With crappy dialogue and meaningless explosions, it followed the formula, but had no life of it’s own. Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez were wasted. I wouldn’t even watch this on cable.
