We know all about the Golden Globe nominations. Nods for the Independent Spirit Awards are out. Even the Critic’s Choice Award nominations have made headlines. Most recently, the Screen Actors Guild has had their say, nominating many of the year’s favorite and worthy actors and ensembles for film and television. However, what’s most significant about these awards is the often (but not always) parallel of wins with the upcoming Oscars, but those won’t be announced until January 25, 2011. It’s pretty safe to say that the most anticipated award for the movie half of the SAG ceremony is Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which is basically the “Best Film” equivalent. This year’s nominees include the cast of Black Swan, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, and The Social Network. This is some heavy competition, especially when you consider the dynamic between each cast and the conflicts that their characters are facing. However, much of the buzz about Black Swan surrounds Natalie Portman’s individual performance, but her ballerina rival Mila Kunis was also recognized for a supporting role.
There were some surprises for this year’s SAG nominations such as Hilary Swank for Conviction for Outstanding Performance by a Female, who was not included as a Golden Globe nominee, whereas her co-star and on-screen brother, Sam Rockwell, did not receive a nod for either. Swank poses a mild threat, but could easily snatch up her third Oscar nomination as a result, since SAG is a “court of actorly opinion,” as per the New York Daily News. The Fighter’s Mark Wahlberg was not nominated for his individual performance, but all three of his co-stars, including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo were acknowledged.
As expected, Annette Bening received a nomination for The Kids Are All Right, but Julianne Moore was not on the list for a lead or supporting role. This is also not the first time that Bening and Swank are head-to-head for the same award. Additionally, while the leads for Blue Valentine received nods from other organizations, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling were not recognized by the Screen Actor’s Guild. We finally see some accolades for the Coen brothers’ True Grit as last year’s SAG winner Jeff Bridges was nominated for his role as Rooster Cogburn.
The ceremony will air on TNT and TBS on January 30, 2011 from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. To check out a complete list of all the nominees, head to the official Screen Actors Guild website. Check back here on Movie Buzzers after the show to read all about the winners!
