Last month, Movie Buzzers reported that this year’s Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (The Help) was set to play Princess Diana in a biopic which explores the final two years of her life. However, the role has now been given to Naomi Watts (J. Edgar), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie, Caught in Flight, will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (The Invasion) with a screenplay written by Stephen Jeffreys (The Libertine). THR explains that the script explores Diana’s personal life, struggle for happiness, her journey in becoming an international figure, and her extensive humanitarian efforts.
Watts has said that it is “an honor to be able to play this iconic role. Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her onscreen.” In addition, Hirschbiegel praises Watts’ caliber as an actress in that she can embody “the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.”
Production is set to begin this year in the U.K. What do you think of the switch from Chastain to Watts? Are you interested in finally seeing a big screen portrayal of the globally-renowned Brit?
