Fun Fact: Since his film debut in 1955, Clint Eastwood has either directed, acted in, or produced at least one film or TV show in every year except 2001, 1996, 1994, 1991, 1987 and 1981. In fact, 1987 was smack in the middle of the time he was mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, so Mayor Eastwood understandably had his hands full. I bring this up because although the man’s output is impressive, it looks like 2011 will actually be added to the list, since Eastwood‘s next film, J. Edgar, is currently scheduled for a 2012 release. But I think we can give the 80-year-old Eastwood the slack since he consistently turns out some of the best films in Hollywood (and sometimes two a year!). In fact, the latest casting news for J. Edgar suggests he’s about to hit another home run… click more to find out who’s signed on and who’s not far off from signing!
So far Leonardo DiCaprio has been cast as FBI head honcho/closeted cross-dresser J. Edgar Hoover, with Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Hoover’s second in command Clyde Tolson, who is also rumored to have been Hoover’s lover. Charlize Theron has been offered the part of Hoover’s secretary Helen Gandy, with Eastwood also recently saying that Judi Dench has signed on to an unspecified role.
The film is shaping up to be something quite interesting… the rumors of J. Edgar Hoover’s personal life have swirled around for decades, and Eastwood has proven how good he is with biopics (Bird) and historical films (Letters From Iwo Jima, Changeling). The writer, Dustin Lance Black, has the impressive Milk on his writing resume, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this!
