If you didn’t know, San Diego Comic Con passes went on sale Saturday at the lovely time of 8 am Pacific time. The only way to get a pass this year was to either buy it at last years convention or sign up for a Member ID prior to the sale. So did all go as smoothly as SDCC planned? Sort of and here’s what happened.
Last year there was a huge issue with the EPIC site continuously crashing every time they put the passes up for sale. This year more rules and proper planning were put in place and for the most part everything was simple, organized and fairly pleasant, but there was a small hiccup. Many people used the link that they received in an email from SDCC but the link was rumored to be broken and people weren’t able to get to the site right as it opened. However SDCC has since come out with the following statement
Comic-Con 2012 badges are sold out. Although our site and EPIC’s registration site was able to handle the load of customers wishing to purchase a badge, the conduit between the link in the email and the registration site was overwhelmed and service was intermittent for a short period of time. However, the link was not incorrect and was not dead, and once the volume of hits decreased it worked as planned. There will be a chance to purchase refunded and returned badges at a later date. Thank you!
Regardless of this slight glitch, my hat is off to the crew at SDCC. I logged in just to get a feel for the process and it went very smoothly. I clicked the link right at 8 am and found myself almost 10,000th in the virtual line. It took about 20 minutes to get to the front of the line and by that time only single day passes were left. A few minutes after that everything was sold out.
Never fear people, there is still a few more opportunities to get passes and like their statement said, there will be refunds and returned badges up for sale in the next few months. The best way to find out about when these go on sale is to follow SDCC’s twitter account, which they use to tweet when the few hundred tickets go on sale so you have to be quick.
This next part is very important so please read this and remember it. DO NOT BUY BADGES FROM CRAIGSLIST OR EBAY OR OTHER SECONDARY WEBSITE. It may not seem like a big deal at first but trust me if you and/or the seller get caught you will be banned from SDCC for LIFE! Also most of the time, these are fake passes, since you can’t get the pass without showing a photo id on the days of the convention. No matter what the sellers says they do not have the passes prior to the convention. You have been warned.
So did you manage to get passes to SDCC this year? If so, you are in luck because you can expect to see panels for Man of Steel, Star Trek 2, The Hobbit, maybe Pacific Rim and maybe, just maybe, Marvel will return this year with some Iron Man 3 stuff since there is no D23 expo this year.
Get excited, July is just around the corner….Kind of!
