In an effort to blow the internet to smithereens (because he likes explosions almost as much as Michael Bay, of course), Jerry Bruckheimer has tweeted out a photo giving us the first look at Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp in Lone Ranger. Check it out below:
Though I think Hammer looks great in a very well-designed Lone Ranger costume (I already want that suit), the real story is how awesome Depp looks as Tonto. The film is going for a very traditional Native American look rather than the basic deerskin/headband outfit that Tonto has typically worn in most adaptations. For example, take a look at a more traditional take on the costumes from the TV series:
The plot description casts the movie in a “wonky buddy cop” vibe, which I hope is a good thing:
The film is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.
Lone Ranger is set for a May 31, 2013 release and also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carter. It is directed by Gore Verbinski, who directed Depp in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Rango.
