South By South West Film Festival Kicked of Friday night with one of the most anticipated horror films in quite some time, Cabin in the Woods. Many know Cabin in the Woods as being the film Joss Whedon wrote and produced but had been shelved for the past two years due to MGM’s bankruptcy. Luckily, Lionsgate came in and scooped the film up and decided to have its world premier during SXSW. I will be the first to say, Thank you to Lionsgate fom giving this film another life! Now for the review. Unfortunately this review will be a bit vague plot wise because they asked that we not spoil the secret cameo and the film.
The film is about a group of five friends who decide to take a trip out to a cabin in the woods that Curt’s (Chris Hemsworth) cousin has recently purchased. Once there all hell breaks loose and the group must try to survive while they try and figure out what is really going on and how to escape.
The film sounds like a typical horror film that has been done a million times over, however Whedon and Director/Co-Writer Drew Goddard decide to throw a huge curve ball and end up giving us one of the most original and genius spins on a horror film that has never been done before.
What was really great was that the film pays homage to the entire horror genre while also poking fun at it as well. The greatest assets to the film are Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford who, hands down, steal the spotlight. Without revealing too much they play scientist-like roles and are the refreshing comedic relief in the film.
This review is very difficult because there is so much to say about the film but the slightest detail will ruin the experience it. If you are a horror fan then this film is a must see! If you are a comedy fan, this is a must see! If you just want an epic mind-blowing experience, Cabin in the Woods is the film for you! It has everything one can want in a film, shock, awe, comedy, horror, romance, suspense. Anything genre you can think of, Cabin in the Woods has it.
SXSW couldn’t have asked for a better film to open the week long festival and from the crowd’s reaction throughout the film, everyone was very pleased. I spoke with many people after the film and not a single person I spoke with had anything bad to say about it. I see the film becoming a huge cult classic and being around for years to come, or in the words of Joss Whedon, “A Timeless Classic”
Cabin in the Woods hits theaters April 13th.
Rating: Great twist on the horror genre and something new and refreshing. Must See!! 9/10
Ih, and just to confuse you even more, there is a killer clown and a unicorn. So if you think you know what the film is about, you have no idea.
