Huayi Brothers Media has a got a lot of fantastic coming up over the next year. On Monday it was announced that a prequel to Tsui Hark’s Chinese fantasy hit, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, was gearing up to start production in July. The prequel, simply titled Detective Dee, will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps as a fantasy based action drama.
The second major film on their slate is Stephen Fung’s second film in his steam-punk martial arts trilogy, titled Tai Chi II: Rise Of A Hero. Production has already started on this film even though the first one, Tai Chi 0, hasn’t been released yet (expect a late 2012 release). Sammo Hung will be taking the lead as action director.
The other seven films include a fantasy action film from director Wuershan (Painted Skin: The Resurrection) titled The Creation Of Gods: Battle Of The Dragons which is currently being scripted. They are also working with Hong Kong director Kenneth Bi on a crime thriller, Taiwanese director/actor Doze Niu (Love) on a gangster film, romantic comedies from Pang Ho-cheung (Love In The Buff) and Teng Hua-tao (Love Is Not Blind) as well as co-producing Kim Yong-hwa’s Mr. Go 3D with Korea’s Showbox Mediaplex.
So suffice to say there is a lot of good stuff going on at the famous Chinese production company which means that the next two years we should have some high quality and entertaining films to look forward to. Thank you Huayi Brothers.
