This year’s Golden Globe nominee Anne Hathaway (Love & Other Drugs) has taken on a variety of roles in her career, including the hot mess drug addict in Rachel Getting Married, a sexy super spy in the comedy Get Smart, the White Queen in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and a coming-of-age assistant in the fashion world in The Devil Wears Prada What you may not know about the versatile New York native is that she is in the process of starring in a biopic of the late, great Judy Garland. The pressure is mounting for young Hathaway to tackle the part of such a legendary force in Hollywood, especially one whose voice is so recognizable- and critics worry that Hathaway’s voice just won’t match up. The Weinstein company is backing the biopic, which is an adaptation of the novel Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland by Gerald Clarke, published in 2001.
BackSeatCuddler recently quoted the actress who revealed, “I certainly don’t sing like Judy Garland but the talk is to have me do the singing. But I think people might cry murder if they don’t get to hear Judy’s beloved voice so the talk is for me to sing but I don’t know if that’s exactly what will happen… It’s a very sensitive project and there have been so many stories told about her life that we’re really trying to get it right.”
This project has been long in the making, and a few weeks ago, if you saw Hathaway hosting Saturday Night Live, she even participated in a skit as Garland’s most treasured film persona, Dorothy from Wizard of Oz.
According to PopCrunch, Harvey Weinstein told WENN earlier this year, “We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role… Gerald Clarke’s biography is a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland’s life and is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings. Her story is incredible subject matter for both theatre and film and we look forward to bringing it to audiences.”
Making a musical appearance during a recent ceremony at the Academy Awards, alongside host Hugh Jackman, the actress returns to the prestigious event this year to co-host with James Franco (127 Hours). While this hosting decision may appeal to a younger audiences and help boost ratings, it’s a no brainer that Hathaway will have to present herself as a triple threat with singing, dancing, and comedic timing to keep audiences interested. Perhaps this is good research for the role?
While there is no confirmation whether or not the film will carry the novel’s title, there is also no information regarding when production will begin. Hathaway is currently in pre-production for The Silver Linings Playbook, opposite Bradley Cooper (The Hangover).
