With The Avengers rapidly approaching the billion dollar mark, it should come to no surprise that a second Avengers film would get the thumbs up from Disney. Today that is exactly what happened, but it may be much more complicated than people are expecting.
Today, during the shareholders meeting, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced that another helping of The Avengers was on the way. Fans around the world rejoice!!!! But wait there could be a huge hiccup in the entire process. What if I told you Robert Downey Jr. might not be returning as Iron Man? No this is not some kind of sick joke I’m telling you, it’s a possible reality.
According to Variety, RDJ originally signed on for four films as Tony Stark and after Iron Man 3 his contractual obligations will be fulfilled. This means Marvel and Disney will need to pony up quite a bit of money to keep RDJ around for more pictures or, they could do the unthinkable and try to recast Tony Stark for The Avengers 2.
I wouldn’t start panicking yet. Disney knows that Downey is their golden goose and that no one will ever be able to replace him as Iron Man. Odds are they will suck it up and pay him some ridiculous amount of money for something like nine more films, just to lock him up.
Fortunately Disney was smart when it came to the rest of the cast and they still have a few more films to fulfill before they can renegotiate their contracts. The only other questionable person would be the director of The Avengers, Joss Whedon. Will he be brought back to direct the sequel given the monumental success of the first one or will Disney continue giving other directors a chance and go with someone new? Luckily there is no release date for the film so they have some time to decide on Whedon, Downey however, not so much.
Do you think RDJ will return as Tony Stark or do you think Disney will replace him? Comment below.
