Like many others, I was profoundly disappointed when Bill Murray didn’t win the Best Actor Oscar for Lost in Translation. Considering how extraordinary of a role that was for him, it was a big surprise when he didn’t get it. But since then Murray has continued to hit it out of the park with stellar understated performances: Broken Flowers, Get Low, and he’s the MVP of Wes Anderson’s movies. But when Murray was announced as playing Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the film adaptation of Richard Nelson’s play Hyde Park on Hudson, it seemed like a big leap for the typically understated Murray.
Well the first trailer is now out, and not only does Murray surprisingly look like FDR, but he does a fantastic job of approaching the role in a way I’d never expected. This just jumped up eight or so spots on my “Can’t Wait to See” list… and about that Oscar? Murray has a good chance of getting it this time around.
The film is directed by Roger Michell (Morning Glory). It is set for a December 7, 2012 release (ahhh… I see what they did there). It also stars Laura Linney, Olivia Williams, Samuel West, and Olivia Colman.
