Woody Allen has not appeared on stage as a stand-up comedian since the late 1960s, but he is still recognized as one of the all-time comedy greats (his successful film career, with numerous laugh-out-loud movies, certainly helped). Today Allen announced the cast of his next film — which will primarily be shot in San Francisco with a few scenes set in New York– and while there are some who were already confirmed, two fellow comedians’ names jump out as surprises. That would be 1980s icon Andrew Dice Clay and digital pioneer Louis C.K., who will join Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Emerson, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard, Max Casella and Alden Ehrenreich in the as-yet-untitled movie. It’s Allen’s first film to shoot in San Francisco since the first movie he directed, 1969’s Take the Money and Run.
While the dirty nursery rhyme-spewing Diceman still draws quite well on the road, he has only had a handful of acting gigs in the last decade, including a multi-episode stint in the final season of Entourage. Louis C.K. is coming off a massive surge in popularity after independently releasing his comedy specials online and reaping the benefits. Allen himself is also coming off a big year, having won yet another Best Original Screenplay Oscar, this time for Midnight in Paris.
