On Friday, Paramount took another one of their big titles and stamped the word “delay” on it. The Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtles flick, which was originally set to come out in 2012 and then pushed to Christmas 2013, now has a new release date of May 16, 2014. Production was pushed back 10 weeks so that the studio could trim the budget down by $10-$20 million dollars, making the film’s new budget $125 million. The live-action-CGI combo flick is being directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the guy who directed Battle: LA and Wrath of the Titans, which I completely forgot and now makes me cringe a little.
You might remember a few months ago when a bunch of news was released with regards to the status of the film and I had said how much I, and a lot of other fans, were against it, what with the turtles becoming aliens and all. Not only am I extremely happy the film was delayed, but I also realized that the film is doomed for mediocrity before it even begins production because simply Jonathan Liebesman is going to be helming it. Granted, he’s had some shitty scripts to work with in the past but his track record doesn’t give me confidence to take on one of the most beloved franchises in the past 30 years and bring them back to quality life. I realize that writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec have gone to town on the script and even though Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was fun (their only feature script), the turtles are a very different breed of characters that require a bit more craftsmanship.
How do you feel about all of this? Are you happy the film was delayed? Are you hoping this version never sees the light of day?
