Besides the typical WB/Legendary and Iron Man 3 Panel, I have to say I was very anxious to see what was in store for Looper because, lets face it, the film looks bad ass.
The panel consisted of director/writer, Rian Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt. Bruce Willis couldn’t attend because he was over in Europe filming, A Good Day to Die Hard. After everyone’s introductions, we jumped right into the trailer that had been making its rounds online which you can see below.
We jumped back into a few questions before Johnson asked the audience if they would like to see 6 minutes of the film. So what was in the extended trailer? Pure awesomeness. This film is going to be intense and full of action. We got a better look at Emily Blunt’s character and how she gets tangled up in the situation and also a nice interaction between JGL and Jeff Daniels, who plays JGL’s boss in the film. It was an interesting interaction, Daniels tells JGL that you can’t get caught up trying to figure out the whole time traveling thing, it will drive you mad. Johnson was asked about this particular scene and why he felt he needed that line in the film. He said that people try to explain time traveling in films and it ends up making a mess and just confusing people, he didn’t want people caught up on the time travel aspect and focus more on the story.
Additionally, there was a scene where Willis and JGL meet in a diner and start to call each other out about their flaws with Willis trying to convince JGL that he needs to change his ways and that they need to go after the boss. Great little scene and people will really enjoy the interaction between the two in this film
It was interesting to learn that Johnson actually wrote this film for JGL and had him in mind the entire time. When it came to casting Bruce for the older version of JGL they realized that the two looked nothing like each other, so the only solution was to put Bruce in the make-up chair. If you pay really close attention to the trailer look at his brow line, his nose and chin. They said he was in make-up everyday so that they could replicate JGL’s features onto Bruce to make them look more similar.
Emily Blunt told a pretty funny story about being on set with Willis. She said in the scene (which is in the trailer) where Bruce is covered in blood, after they were done with shooting it, he came over to where Blunt was sitting with a flowery umbrella to shield her from the sun due to her “pale British skin tone.” She said someone on set captured a picture of her and a blood covered Bruce holding a flowery umbrella just sitting and talking. I would love to see this photo and hope they release it on the DVD as a special feature. No matter what Bruce does, he always looks cool doing it!
All in all I, along with everyone else in Hall H, was very pleased with the footage and the panel. If you are looking for a fantastic film in September, you won’t want to miss Looper on the 28th!
