Man of Steel, where does one begin to start describing a film that has been kept in secret and hasn’t released any footage? Well lets start with SDCC as a starting point.
Zach Snyder came out and did a brief set up before unveiling the first piece of footage from the film. He said that there will be a teaser before The Dark Knight Rises next week but today he decided to bring a bit more to SDCC. Cut to the extended teaser.
We see flashes of Smallville. The farm house. Clark running in a red cape as a child. An older, bearded Clark walks a snowy road in an arctic town. We hear Russell Crowe’s voice explaining about children being inspired to greater things (I thought of Spider-Man when I heard this). We see Clark being brought to the Kent barn and shown the spaceship that has been hidden there. Clark holds a small piece of metal with the S logo on the end which looks to be a key for the ship. There is a bunch of jumping back and forth through time periods showing Clark, as a teen, saved a bus of kids. The bus crashed in the water and we see him swimming, pulling the door off and we hear a woman saying “My child saw what Clark did for the school bus.” “People are afraid of what they don’t understand,” says Costner. We see Clark talking to Jor-El in either the ship or the fortress of solitude, it isn’t really clear. We see Superman in the suit, first from a distance and then walking across a snowy plain. There are flashes of Superman flying and one of him catching someone falling off a building. A single flash of Amy Adams‘ Lois Lane and a very, very quick shot of Michael Shannon as Zod. One flash has Superman in handcuffs being led down a hallway by, what looks to be, the military. Obviously it’s his own will. We see Clark stepping into an elevator and begin to lift the iconic glasses to his face for the ultimate disguise. There’s a flash of Clark, shirtless, with his whole body on fire and finally we see him crashing into the bank vault as if he’s been thrown or shot with something powerful. Then the now infamous pose of him and the bank vault destroyed. All in all the clip was around 2 minutes I would say.
Henry Cavill then came out and began answering a few of fan questions.
A man came up and began balling his eyes out because he was so emotional about the footage and asked if they could say who the villain of the film was. Snyder was reluctant to say a name, we almost got him to say Zod but he said just watch the teaser again. Which we did and it’s Zod.
After the teaser was shown the second time, a new poster was shown on screen for the film which you can see above.
- A fan asked between Snyders Superman and Nolans Batman, who would win… Snyder said Nolan was awesome and so was Batman, but really? Pretty funny reaction by Synder
- Comic book character existed and they couldn’t ignore that however they had to look past it and then put it in their minds that there has never been a Superman film and this needed to be original… This was the answer to a man asking if the original theme music would be in it.
- Death and Return of Superman were the two comics Cavill focused on to really get into his version of Superman along with Red Sun because of the different view points.
- A girl tried to trick Synder into saying Zod by asking since he made Superman more relatable, did he do the same for Zod. Snyder once again dodged the question and said that every character in the film was in some way relatable.
- A man asked if this version of Superman would be making an appearance in a Batman vs. Superman film or a Justice League film? Snyder didn’t really say much regarding it but said they wanted to get Superman grounded first then who knows?
- Finally a man asked that since Clark Kent has a beard in the trailer would he shave it off with his heat vision. Snyder wouldn’t answer that question because that is more along the lines of a spoiler but said anything is possible.
All in all the panel was pretty good, however I did start to get the feeling that Zach Snyder is a bit of a cocky asshole and almost seemed as if he was too cool to be at Comic-Con. Maybe it was just me but just his tone and mannerisms kind of rubbed me the wrong way. When the dude started crying because he was so emotional about the film, Snyder should have said something or done something but yet he didn’t and Chris Hardwick (he was moderating) came down hugged the guy and said thank you to him because he was the true meaning of Comic-Con and what a fan should be.
