It’s funny — while Marvel Comics continues to cleanup at the box office whith its big-name superhero characters, DC has had startling success with some of their lesser-known properties like The Losers, Constantine, and Red. It’s no surprise then that DC has had a Lobo movie in the works, based on the alien bounty hunter created in the early 1980s who was reinvented in the 1990s as an alien biker parody of Wolverine, becoming one of the decade’s most popular characters. The character’s adventures, which usually combine ultra-violence and humor, caught on with fans.
A Lobo movie has been in the works for several years, with Guy Ritchie‘s name frequently brought up as a director (which would’ve been a great fit). However, in recent months it’s been made clear that Brad Peyton, who is a director who hasn’t been nearly as successful as Ritchie (Peyton has directed Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore), would write and direct the film. Since Peyton’s last film starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, speculation suggested Johnson would be considered for the role
Yesterday, Johnson confirmed it via Twitter, posting “Rumors of me possibly playing LOBO are true. Joel Silver and Brad Peyton working on it now. That could be fun..” For what it’s worth, Silver is a frequent producer of DC Comics movies, though he’s never worked with Johnson. The Rock would be a good choice if he’s able to tap into his arrogant, cocky pro wrestling character, although I can’t see Johnson being a huge fan of heavy metal like the character is.
