It seems pretty odd that quirky director Wes Anderson and quirky actor Johnny Depp have never worked together. Granted, Anderson has only made six films (seven if you count the animated Fantastic Mr. Fox) and he tends to use the same actors in every film. But that day has finally come: Deadline has reported that the two will team up for Anderson’s next film, The Grand Budapest Hotel.
It’s a good move for both: Anderson will likely reach new audiences by casting one of the world’s most popular actors, and Depp will probably benefit from the time away from Tim Burton. No word on what the film is actually about, but the title certainly recalls Anderson’s earlier short Hotel Chevalier. Anderson also always works with a co-writer (typically Owen Wilson, Roman Coppola, Noah Baumbach, or Jason Schwartzman), and there’s no word on who he’s writing with this time.
In addition, The Sun is reporting that Anderson is also considering adding several of his previous stars to the cast, including Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, and, of course, Bill Murray. The report also names two others who Anderson hasn’t worked with yet, Jude Law and Angela Lansbury. In any combination that would make for an awesome cast… although I’m not sure I could handle Bill Murray and Johnny Depp in the same movie.
