I recently saw Spike Lee‘s Red Hook Summer and was really disappointed. With the exception of Inside Man, it’s been a decade since Lee has made a great narrative film. So it was a bit of a surprise that Lee was tapped to direct the American remake of Oldboy, the awesome 2003 Korean revenge drama, since it’s such a beloved film and Lee has had such an inconsistent career lately.
Nonetheless, the announcement that Josh Brolin would star in the film was a piece of good news considering how talented of an actor he is. Now according to the L.A. Times, Lee has signed another great actor — and an old friend — to appear in the film: Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson hasn’t appeared in one of Lee’s films since 1991’s Jungle Fever, but Jackson appeared in three other of Lee’s earlier films, including Lee’s masterpiece Do the Right Thing. Jackson is set to star as one of Brolin’s guards while Brolin is in captivity… which suggests something about Jackson’s character’s demise that I won’t spoil.
In addition, Lee’s regular collaborator Bruce Hornsby will be writing the film’s music. Frankly the best part of Red Hook Summer was the music, so this is a good move.
Oldboy, which is being directed from a script by Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend), is set to start filming this fall in Louisiana and New York.
