Leave it to the random countries to create some of the most F’d up pieces of cinema to ever grace the big screen. At the end of 2010, beginning of 2011 we had Serbia delivering us A Serbian Film, easily staking its claim as the most fucked-up movie of the year. This year, Croatia seems like it’s going to take that honor with their horrific entry to the film world, a film titled Vegetarian Cannibal.
Directed by Branko Schmidt, the film looks to get as explicit as it needs to for the sake of social commentary. I probably shouldn’t be posting this so early in the day as the trailer is laced with dog fighting, late stage abortions, hard sex and a bit of blood but, I am, so just mentally prepare yourself. Vegetarian Cannibal won a few awards at the Pula Film Festival, including best actor and director, so maybe it’ll be kind of good…or maybe it’ll just royally screw with your mind.
Check out the trailer and synopsis below and be sure to share your thoughts. there are no subtitles but you should be able to get the gist of the story between the two.
Dr Danko Babić (Rene Bitorajac) is a successful gynecologist in his mid-30s. Although clearly an expert in his field, he is an unscrupulously ambitious and utterly despicable person. Babić’s best friend is chief police inspector Ilija (Leon Lučev), with whom he takes part in sport-betting scams, and who leads him to ‘controversial businessman’ Jedinko (Emir Hadžihafizbegović). Jedinko deals in hard drugs and high-end prostitution (naturally, with police support), and needs a gynecologist to take care of his ‘employees’, meaning doing illegal abortions for the pros. It all represents government, organized crime and corruption working hand-in-hand, typical of Croatian society.
