Movie Buzzers had the good fortune to be invited to the red carpet of the New York premiere of The Eye of the Storm, an Australian production that has won all sorts of awards Down Under (you can check out my review of the film here!) I was able to speak to screenwriter Judy Morris (Happy Feet) one on one, shot a quick question to star Alexandra Schepisi, talked to theater/film director Julie Taymor, and, best of all, participated in a group chat with Geoffrey Rush, who might just be the nicest, most attentive star I’ve ever gotten to speak with.
Judy Morris
Screenwriter Judy Morris, who spent many years as an actress, spoke to me about how honored she was to adapt such an important novel in the history of Australian literature. But she also admitted it wasn’t easy!
Julie Taymor
Though she wasn’t involved in the film and just there for the show, famous theater/film director Julie Taymor stopped to speak to me about her upcoming projects: a new theater she is opening in Brooklyn and her next film, The Transposed Heads.
Though I didn’t have enough time to get my recorder going, I was able to shoot a quick question to Alexandra Schepisi about being directed by her father, Frank, during filming. I asked her if she called him “Dad” on set and, with a laugh, she answered that she actually made the decision to call him “Frank” to keep it as professional as possible. She also added that she had no problem taking direction from her father!
As I said above, Rush was a total gentleman with answering any question we wanted to ask — even when he seemed like the staff was trying to drag him away! He seemed particularly honored to appear in this film made in his native Australia, especially since he was recently named the 2012 Australian of the Year… something he was both humble but full of pride about. And makes sure you don’t miss the crack he takes at Green Lantern…
