If you’re like me, you still find a lot of deep wisdom in Charles Shulz‘s Peanuts comic strip and its popular cartoon adaptations. While most of those adaptations were created for television, a handful of Peanuts films actually made it to theaters — perhaps most famously the 1969 film A Boy Named Charlie Brown. But it’s been more than three decades since Snoopy and the gang have starred in a theatrical film even though twelve years after the end of the strip and Shulz’s death (he famously died the day before his farewell strip was published).
However, Shulz’s heirs have signed a deal with Fox Animation to bring a new Peanuts film to theaters on November 25, 2015 (2015 will be the 65th anniversary of the first Peanuts strip and the 50th anniversary of the first Peanuts TV special, the legendary A Charlie Brown Christmas). Steve Martino, who co-directed Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! and Ice Age: Continental Drift, will be directing from a screenplay by Craig Shulz, Bryan Schulz, and Cornelius Uliano (Craig and Bryan are Charles Shulz’s son and grandson, respectively).
I’m curious to how CGI Peanuts will look, but I am sure it will retain the classic look of Shulz’s art. Either way, it is wonderful that these great characters will continue to live on and entertain people of all ages.
