One of the more impressive films I saw a trailer for during SDCC was Neill Blomkamp‘s Sci-Fi action film Elysium. The strange thing was that this film has been kept under the radar for quite some time and very few images or details have been leaked regarding the film. What was probably even stranger however was that Sony decided to give it a pretty shitty release time, especially for what I’m assuming was a high budget film, but thankfully that has changed.
Originally Elysium was set for a theatrical release of March 2013, like I said before and the data will back it up February and March are not the greatest times for blockbuster films, for some reason the time of year just doesn’t translate well for box office numbers. This is usually when we see smaller budget films and horror films released, not big budget Sci-fi films. Luckily, Sony wised up somewhat and has now moved the Matt Damon vehicle to August 9, 2013, a much better slot for this kind of film.
The reason for the change though might come to some as a surprise or to others as not a surprise at all. Originally that date was slotted for the release of Jose Padilha‘s Robocop reboot which isn’t going to be ready in time and has now been pushed back to February 7, 2014. Now you might be saying, well wait didn’t you just say films with low potential and budgets usually debut in February and March? Yes, yes I did, which should tell you something about Robocop. If they really felt great about this film they would have moved it to at least early May or found a spot somewhere in the summer months. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Robocop gets moved again to a later release date, but who knows besides MGM and Sony.
So are you more or less interested in these films and their new release dates? It will be interesting to see if Sony brings both films to SDCC’13 considering Elysium was previously there and Robocop had some random movie props scattered around San Diego.
